Starlink for Church Retreats & Youth Camps: Livestreams, Safety & Setup (2026)

Use CasesUpdated October 28, 2026 · 6 min read

Short answer

Yes. Starlink works well at church retreats, youth camps and group outings far from cell service. One kit typically gives about 65-130+ Mbps down and 10-15 Mbps up, enough to livestream a service at 720p, hold a Zoom call with families at home, and keep leaders connected for safety. For a livestream plus leader Wi-Fi, plan two kits.

Key takeaways

  • Upload sets your stream quality. Starlink’s ~10-15 Mbps upload suits a 720p livestream.
  • Use the built-in content filter. The Starlink app can block malware and adult sites across the whole network.
  • Keep a leaders-only network. Separate staff and streaming devices from campers, or don’t offer camper Wi-Fi at all.
  • Plan power before you arrive. A Standard kit draws about 75-100 W, a Mini about 25-40 W.
  • Book group kits early through Borrow Starlink. Multi-kit quotes usually come back within 24-48 hours.

Yes. Many retreat centers, campgrounds and wilderness sites have weak or no cell service. Starlink connects straight to satellites, so it works anywhere it can see open sky. That gives leaders a dependable way to stay in touch, share a service with people at home, and handle an emergency.

What one kit typically gives you:

  • Download: about 65-130+ Mbps
  • Upload: about 10-15 Mbps
  • Latency: about 25-55 ms

That’s plenty for leaders’ phones, check-ins and video calls. It gets tighter if you livestream while dozens of devices use the same connection.

Many groups go on retreat partly to unplug. Starlink doesn’t change that: you decide who gets access and when.

Yes, with sensible settings. A livestream is mostly upload, and that’s Starlink’s smaller number.

Use Upload needed Fits one kit?
Zoom group call, 720p ~2.6 Mbps Yes
Zoom group call, 1080p ~3.8 Mbps Yes
YouTube Live, 720p30 ~8 Mbps recommended Yes, if it’s alone
YouTube Live, 1080p30 ~14 Mbps recommended Often too tight

For most retreats, 720p is the right choice. It looks good on phones and TVs and leaves room for the connection to vary. YouTube’s minimum for 1080p30 is lower than its recommendation, but there’s little room for error on a satellite link.

Practical setup:

  1. Give the stream its own kit, or ask everyone to stay off Wi-Fi during the service.
  2. Connect the streaming computer by Ethernet, not Wi-Fi. Our guide to connecting a computer to Starlink shows how.
  3. Test the day before, at the same time of day, with a private or unlisted stream.
  4. Record locally as well, so you can upload the full service later if the live stream hiccups.

Tip: Evenings can be slower in congested areas. If your main service is at night, test at night too, and lower the bitrate if your test upload is near the limit.

Zoom with families at home

A nightly Zoom or a parents’ update call works well. Zoom’s 1080p group call guideline is about 3.8 Mbps up and 3.0 Mbps down, well within one kit.

This is often the most important reason to bring it. With a connection on site, leaders can:

  • Message parents, the church office and each other over Wi-Fi.
  • Make Wi-Fi calls from phones that support it.
  • Share medical forms and contact lists stored in the cloud.
  • Coordinate pick-up times if plans change.

Keep the Starlink powered and on a leaders-only network so it’s never swamped when you need it. Starlink is not an emergency service. Know where the nearest landline, ranger station or hospital is, and file your trip plan as you normally would.

The Starlink router has some useful built-in controls. Know their limits too.

  • Content filtering: blocks malware sites, or malware plus adult content, for the whole network. You can’t pick specific websites to block.
  • Pause devices: cut internet to a specific phone or tablet while it stays connected to Wi-Fi. You pause and unpause manually.
  • Guest network: recent app versions let you add a second network marked as a guest network, kept separate from your main devices. If your app doesn’t show this, the options below still work.

What it can’t do

There are no per-device schedules, time limits or custom block lists. If you need those, connect a third-party router with parental controls.

Simple setups that work

  • No camper Wi-Fi. Leaders only. Simplest and fits the “unplug” goal.
  • Scheduled access. Share the camper password only during set free-time windows, then change it.
  • Two kits. One for leaders and streaming, one filtered network for campers.

Use a strong password on every network. See how to secure your Starlink Wi-Fi.

Kit Average draw 1,000 Wh battery
Starlink Mini ~25-40 W ~24 hours
Standard / Roam Gen 3 ~75-100 W ~9 hours
  • With hookups or a lodge: plug into a normal 110 V outlet.
  • Off-grid: use a portable power station, a generator, or for the Mini, a 100 W USB-C power bank. Borrow Starlink also rents a 60 W solar panel from $5/day.
  • Generators: run them outdoors and away from tents and cabins, because of carbon monoxide.
  • Cold or snow: the dish uses more power to stay warm and melt snow. Plan extra headroom for a winter retreat.

How many kits does a group need, and when should you book?

  • Small group or day outing: 1 kit for leaders and safety.
  • Overnight retreat with a livestream: 2 kits, one for the stream and one for leaders.
  • Large camp or spread-out site: 2-4+ kits. One router covers about 3,200 sq ft in ideal conditions, much less across open fields or between cabins. See how far Starlink Wi-Fi reaches.

Book early. Retreat dates are usually set months ahead, and holiday and summer weeks fill up. Borrow Starlink rents in whole days, with a $350 fully refundable damage deposit, and cancellations within 48 hours of the start aren’t refunded. Kits ship nationwide or can be picked up in American Fork, UT.

When Starlink isn’t needed: if your retreat center already has solid wired internet, use it, and keep Starlink as a backup only if the site is remote.

Frequently asked questions

Can we livestream a church service over Starlink?

Yes. YouTube recommends about 8 Mbps for a 720p stream at 30 fps, and Starlink upload is usually about 10-15 Mbps. Give the stream its own kit or keep other devices off during the service, and test the day before.

Does the Starlink router have parental controls?

It has basic ones. The Starlink app offers network-wide content filtering (malware, or malware and adult content) and lets you pause internet for individual devices. It doesn’t let you choose specific sites to block or set per-device time limits. For that, add a third-party router.

Can I set up a separate network for kids or guests?

Recent versions of the Starlink app let you add a second network marked as a guest network, isolated from your main devices. If your app doesn’t show it, use a separate kit or a third-party router.

How many Starlink kits does a youth camp need?

Often one for leaders and safety, plus one for livestreaming or a camper-facing network if you offer one. Large or spread-out camps may need more.

Can Starlink run off a campsite's power?

Yes, from a normal 110 V outlet or a generator. Off-grid, a 1,000 Wh power station runs a Mini about 24 hours or a Standard about 9 hours. Keep generators outdoors, away from tents and cabins.
