Starlink for Holiday Events: Christmas Markets, Tree Lots & New Year’s Eve (2026)

Use CasesUpdated October 28, 2026 · 6 min read

Short answer

Yes. Starlink works well for outdoor holiday events like Christmas markets, tree lots, light shows and New Year’s Eve parties. One kit typically gives about 10-15 Mbps upload and 65-130+ Mbps download, which is plenty for card readers and ticket scanning, but a livestream or busy guest Wi-Fi needs its own kit. Plan for power, a clear view of the sky, and a backup way to take payments.

Key takeaways

  • Card readers need little bandwidth but must stay online. Know your POS offline mode before the event.
  • Split jobs across kits. Payments on one kit, livestream or guest Wi-Fi on another.
  • Upload is the limit for streaming. Starlink upload is usually about 10-15 Mbps.
  • Power and placement matter more than the dish. A Standard kit draws about 75-100 W and needs a clear sky view.
  • Book multiple kits through Borrow Starlink’s enterprise team. Quotes usually come back within 24-48 hours.

Yes. Holiday events often happen in places with no wired internet: a parking lot tree sale, a town square market, a farm light show or a New Year’s Eve party at a rented barn. Cell service can also slow to a crawl when a crowd shows up. Starlink connects straight to satellites, so it doesn’t depend on local towers.

What to expect from one kit, in typical conditions:

  • Download: roughly 65-130+ Mbps
  • Upload: roughly 10-15 Mbps
  • Latency: roughly 25-55 ms
  • Speeds can dip in the evening in congested areas, which is when many holiday events peak.

That’s more than enough for payments and ticketing. It gets tighter when you add a livestream and hundreds of guests on open Wi-Fi.

Yes. Square, Clover, Toast and similar systems connect over Wi-Fi like a phone or laptop, and each payment uses very little data. What matters is that the connection stays up. Before the event, set up offline mode as a backup:

System Offline payments (as of Oct 2026)
Square Supported; upload within 72 hours
Clover Mini/Flex default up to 7 days
Toast Supported if enabled beforehand

The catch with every offline mode: the seller takes the risk. Cards aren’t checked while offline, so declined or expired payments are your loss. Square lets you cap the amount per offline sale, and it doesn’t support some payment types offline, including Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android and Cash App Pay. Treat offline mode as a safety net, not a plan.

Tip: Run a $1 test sale on every reader after setup, and again once the crowd arrives. Connect the main POS tablet to Starlink by Ethernet if it supports it.

What about ticket scanning, livestreams and guest Wi-Fi?

Ticket scanning

Scanning apps use little data. Eventbrite says its Organizer app supports offline check-in and syncs when it reconnects. Even so, a live connection lets multiple entry gates see the same check-ins and stops duplicate tickets.

Livestreaming a light show or countdown

Live video is all upload, and upload is Starlink’s tighter number. YouTube recommends about 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, with lower minimums. On a kit giving 10-15 Mbps up, stream at 720p or a modest 1080p bitrate, and keep it on its own kit with nobody else using it.

Guest Wi-Fi

Open Wi-Fi for vendors or guests is the fastest way to swamp a connection. If you offer it, put it on a separate kit from payments. Set a password and check our guide to securing your Starlink Wi-Fi.

Assign each critical job its own connection:

Event type Suggested kits Why
Tree lot or single pop-up 1 Payments only
Small market (5-15 vendors) 1-2 Shared vendor payments
Large market or light show 2-4+ Gates, payments, office
NYE party with livestream 2 Stream + guest/payments

Range also matters. A Gen 3 router covers about 3,200 sq ft in ideal conditions, and much less outdoors with crowds, booths and vehicles in the way. For a long row of vendor stalls, plan extra kits or mesh. See how far Starlink Wi-Fi reaches.

How do you set up power and handle winter weather?

Power

  • Standard / Roam Gen 3: about 75-100 W average, plugs into a normal 110 V outlet.
  • Mini: about 25-40 W, runs from a USB-C power bank rated at 100 W or a 12-48 V DC source.
  • Battery rule of thumb: Wh × 0.85 ÷ watts. A 1,000 Wh station runs a Standard for about 9 hours or a Mini for about 24 hours.
  • Generators: run them outdoors and away from crowds, because of carbon monoxide. Keep the Starlink power cable away from foot traffic.

Weather and placement

  • Both dishes operate from -22°F to 122°F and handle 60+ mph winds when properly mounted.
  • The Standard melts about 1.5 in/hr of snow, the Mini about 1 in/hr. Melting increases power use.
  • Put the dish where it has a clear sky view, away from buildings, tall trees and string-light poles. Raise it above crowd height so people don’t wander in front of it.
  • Never cover the dish, even in snow.

Book as soon as your date is set. December weekends and New Year’s Eve are busy, and shipping takes time. Borrow Starlink handles multi-kit event orders, from a few kits to dozens, with rentals in whole-day intervals. Kits ship nationwide configured and ready, or you can pick them up in American Fork, UT.

Starlink isn’t the right call everywhere. If your venue has solid wired internet, use that and keep Starlink as backup. For more ideas, see our guide to Starlink rental for events.

Frequently asked questions

Can I run Square or Clover on Starlink?

Yes. Card readers connect over Wi-Fi like any other device, and they need very little bandwidth. The bigger risk is the connection dropping, so turn on your POS’s offline mode ahead of time as a backup.

How many people can use one Starlink at an event?

The Gen 3 router supports up to 235 devices, but speed is shared. For open guest Wi-Fi at a busy event, plan a separate kit, and consider adding mesh or access points for coverage.

Can I livestream a New Year's Eve countdown over Starlink?

Usually, yes, at 720p or a modest 1080p bitrate. YouTube recommends about 8 Mbps for 720p30 and 14 Mbps for 1080p30, so give the stream its own kit and keep the bitrate well below your tested upload speed.

Does Starlink work in cold December weather?

Yes. The Standard and Mini dishes are rated to -22°F and melt snow that lands on them. Melting snow uses more power, so plan for it on a generator or battery.

What power do I need at a market stall?

A standard 110 V outlet or a generator. A Standard kit averages about 75-100 W, and a Mini about 25-40 W. Run generators outdoors, away from people, because of carbon monoxide.
